Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does Homes With Help do for it's clients?

First we will meet with you to discuss what housing options we have available at the time you'd like to move. Next we'll help you find a roommate, and after you are moved in we can provide 3 meals and 1 snack each day. We will also help you organize and remember to take your medications. We'll supply toiletries that you need, and check in on you regularly to make sure everything is okay. We can help with transportation to doctor appointments, and with other needs as well. It will be your home though (with roommates). There will not be staff there all the time. 24-hour on-call staff will be available for emergencies though.

How do clients come to Homes With Help?

Many of our clients were previously living with family and wanted to be more independent – to have a place of their own. Some of our clients are referrals after discharge from hospitals or institutions. We also receive referrals from various community organizations.

Will I have roommates? How does that work?

Most clients choose to have roommates in order to keep costs down. That is your choice. Typically each house has roommates all the same gender. If you already have roommates you'd like to live with, that can be arranged as well.

What type of living arrangements do you offer?

There are houses, apartments, and licensed group homes available.

What are the meals like?

The menu is planned to adhere to the Canada Food Guide as closely as possible. Meals are basic in nature. Previous weekly menus are available to view. Our kitchen meets all guidelines and is inspected by the Durham Region Health Department regularly. Special diets can usually be accommodated. A nominal fee would apply.

What can the transportation service be used for?

Transportation to doctor appointments and for other critical reasons is available, but must be planned in advance. Transportation is provided by a licensed school bus driver. Please see rate sheet for cost of service.

Are other services offered?

Other services may be offered if needed. These will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
